Founder Bio

Amrita Chandra is the Founder of tinku gallery, a contemporary art gallery in Toronto, Canada. tinku gallery represents emerging and mid-career artists from across Canada and the US working in the mediums of painting, photography and mixed media .

Amrita opened tinku gallery in May 2008 to make contemporary art more accessible to new collectors without compromising on the quality of art and the caliber of artists that more established collectors expect. As a collector herself, Amrita found most contemporary art galleries unapproachable and opened tinku as a way to broaden the reach of contemporary art for people who are starting their own art collections. Born in India, Amrita moved to Newfoundland, Canada as a child. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from The University of Western Ontario and a Masters in Business Administration from the F.W. Olin Graduate School at Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts.

Prior to opening tinku gallery, Amrita spent 15 years in a marketing career spanning several countries and industries, traveling to over 30 countries on 6 continents. While working in Bulgaria for the country’s largest independent advertising agency, Amrita was exposed to its rich arts culture and befriended a community of artists which sparked her love for visual art. Amrita started collecting art in the late 1990s and was selling art privately before she discovered the space that is now tinku gallery.

In addition to owning tinku gallery, Amrita is a marketing consultant to companies in the software, design and consumer goods industries. Amrita has spoken at industry and press events around the world on the topics of women in technology and women entrepreneurs.

Amrita speaks French, Hindi and Bulgarian well enough to be left alone in a room full of non-English speakers and leave with a handful of new friends! Amrita resides in Toronto and gets away often to her cabin in Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland.

Amrita is available for interviews and speaking engagements on the topics of art, entrepreneurship, women entrepreneurs and travel.
